Yoga poses for tight hamstrings

Tight hamstrings make forward folds feel impossible and can pull on the lower back. They are common in runners, lifters, and anyone who sits for long periods.

The key with hamstrings is patience. Bend your knees more than you think you need to, lead with a long spine instead of a rounded back, and let the stretch grow over several breaths. These poses start gently and get more specific as you go.

Put it together

Warm up with downward dog and three-legged dog, then step forward to a standing forward fold. Move through pyramid and triangle on each side. Come to the floor for head to knee, seated forward fold, and spine stretch forward. Finish with legs up the wall for a few minutes. Add extended hand to big toe once the standing poses feel comfortable.

Questions about this collection

How can I loosen tight hamstrings with yoga?

Practice a few hamstring stretches most days, keep your knees bent, and hold each stretch for five to ten slow breaths. Downward dog, pyramid pose, and seated forward fold are good places to start. Change comes over weeks, not in a single session.

Should I keep my legs straight in forward folds?

Not if it makes your back round. A bent knee lets you fold from the hips with a long spine, which stretches the hamstrings more effectively and puts less strain on your lower back.

Why do my hamstrings stay tight even when I stretch?

Hamstrings sometimes stay tight to protect an area that is weak or tired. Pair stretching with strength work like bridge pose and three-legged dog, and stretch consistently instead of forcefully.
