Extended hand to big toe

Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana

Also called Standing big toe hold, Standing hand to toe pose

Extended hand to big toe is a standing balance where you hold your lifted big toe and extend the leg forward. It strengthens the standing leg and stretches the hamstrings of the lifted leg. A tall spine matters more than a straight leg, so a bent knee or a strap is a smart place to start.

  8. 8Bend your right knee, release your foot, and lower it to the mat with control before you switch sides.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

The back rounds to force the leg straight.

Bend your lifted knee or use a strap, and keep your chest lifted.

The hip of the lifted leg hikes up toward the ribs.

Draw that hip down so it sits level with the other one, even if the leg lowers a little.

The standing knee locks back.

Keep a micro bend in the standing knee and lift through the thigh muscles.

The shoulder on the holding side pulls forward.

Draw your shoulder back and down, and hold the strap farther from your foot if you need more room.

Modifications

  • Keep your knee bent and hold it in front of your chest.
  • Use a strap around the ball of your foot instead of holding the toe.
  • Rest your free hand on a wall or chair for balance.
  • Practice the reclined version on your back with a strap to build hamstring length first.

Benefits

  • Strengthens the standing leg and ankle.
  • Stretches the hamstrings of the lifted leg.
  • Builds balance and steady focus.
  • Encourages a tall, upright posture.

Breath

Breathe slowly and evenly through the nose. If your breath gets short or you start to hold it, bend the knee and find your balance again.

Take care

Take care with hamstring, hip, or lower back injuries, and use a wall or chair if your balance is unsteady. Build balance in tree pose first, and stop if you feel sharp pain.

Extended hand to big toe questions

Do I need to straighten my leg in extended hand to big toe pose?

No. A tall spine and level hips matter more than a straight leg. Bend the knee or use a strap until your hamstrings allow more length.

How do I balance in Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana?

Press evenly through your standing foot, firm the standing thigh, and look at a still point ahead. Practicing near a wall helps while you build steadiness.

Can I take the leg out to the side?

Yes, many classes open the leg out to the side after the forward version. Keep your hips level and your standing leg firm as you move it.
