Rolling like a ball

Rolling like a ball is a playful pilates mat exercise where you hold a small, rounded shape and roll back and forth along your spine. It trains core control, balance, and a smooth curve through the back. The skill is keeping the same shape the whole way, so you roll like a ball instead of rocking like a board.

How to do Rolling like a ball

  1. 1Sit near the front of your mat with your knees bent and your feet on the floor.
  2. 2Hold your shins or ankles, draw your knees in toward your chest, and round your spine into a C curve.
  3. 3Tip back just behind your sit bones and lift your feet off the mat to find your balance.
  4. 4Drop your chin slightly toward your chest and keep your gaze on your belly.
  5. 5Inhale and roll back to the tops of your shoulder blades, keeping the same rounded shape.
  6. 6Exhale and roll back up to balance, pausing with your feet hovering off the mat.
  7. 7Repeat for six to eight smooth rolls.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

The head throws back to start the roll.

Keep your chin tucked toward your chest and start the roll by deepening the curve in your lower belly.

The roll goes too far onto the neck.

Stop at the tops of your shoulder blades and keep your weight off your head and neck.

The shape opens up as you roll.

Keep the distance between your knees and chest the same, with your heels close to your body.

The feet slam down at the top.

Slow the roll up with your exhale and use your abdominals to balance with your feet off the mat.

Modifications

  • Hold the backs of your thighs instead of your shins for a looser shape.
  • Practice the balance at the top without rolling until it feels steady.
  • Make the roll smaller, going back only as far as your lower back.
  • Place a folded blanket or thicker mat under your spine for padding.

Benefits

  • Builds core control and balance.
  • Encourages a smooth, even curve through the spine.
  • Trains you to move with a steady breath.
  • Adds a playful, rhythmic break to a mat session.

Breath

Inhale as you roll back and exhale as you roll up to balance. Let the breath set a steady rhythm.

Take care

Take care with back or neck injuries, roll on a padded surface, and never roll onto your neck or head. Stop if you feel sharp pain.

Rolling like a ball questions

Why do I get stuck on my back in rolling like a ball?

This usually happens when the curve flattens as you roll back. Keep your chin tucked and your heels close to your body, and use your exhale to draw your belly in as you roll up.

Is rolling like a ball safe for beginners?

It is a common beginner exercise when done on a padded mat with a small, controlled roll. Keep the roll on your rounded back, stop at your shoulder blades, and skip it if rolling on your spine is uncomfortable.

What does rolling like a ball work?

It mainly works the abdominals, which hold the rounded shape and control the roll. It also trains balance at the top of each roll.
