Single leg stretch

Single leg stretch is a pilates mat exercise where you hold a chest lift and switch legs, one knee drawing in while the other leg reaches long. It is part of the classic abdominal series. Form matters because the torso should stay still while the legs move, and that stillness is where the core work comes from.

How to do Single leg stretch

  1. 1Lie on your back and bring both knees into tabletop.
  2. 2Nod your chin and curl your head and shoulders up to the tips of your shoulder blades.
  3. 3Draw your right knee toward your chest, with your right hand on your right ankle and your left hand on your right knee.
  4. 4Extend your left leg long at a height where your lower back stays steady.
  5. 5Switch legs, drawing your left knee in with your left hand on your left ankle and your right hand on your left knee.
  6. 6Keep switching with a steady rhythm while your torso stays lifted and still.
  7. 7Complete eight to ten reps on each side, then hug both knees in and lower your head.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

The torso rocks side to side as the legs switch.

Slow down and keep your shoulders and pelvis still while only the legs move.

The extended leg is too low and the back arches.

Raise the extended leg higher toward the ceiling until your lower back stays steady.

The head and shoulders sink as you tire.

Lower your head to rest and continue the leg pattern, then curl back up when you are ready.

The hands yank the knee in hard.

Use a light touch on the knee and ankle, and let the abdominals hold the shape.

Modifications

  • Keep your head down on the mat if your neck tires.
  • Extend the long leg higher toward the ceiling.
  • Slow the tempo and pause briefly on each switch.
  • Rest your hands by your sides instead of holding the knee.

Benefits

  • Builds abdominal strength and endurance.
  • Trains a steady pelvis while the legs move.
  • Improves coordination and rhythm.

Breath

A common pattern is to inhale for two leg switches and exhale for two. Keep the breath steady and avoid holding it.

Take care

If your neck strains, rest your head on the mat and keep the leg work going. Take care with lower back or hip injuries, and stop if you feel sharp pain.

Single leg stretch questions

Where do my hands go in single leg stretch?

Place your outside hand on the ankle and your inside hand on the knee of the bent leg. This helps keep the knee in line with the hip.

Why do I feel single leg stretch in my neck?

Your neck may be holding the curl as your abdominals tire. Nod your chin, gaze toward your belly, and rest your head down when you need to.
